Employment Opportunity: Active Living Community Coordinator 
Location: Halifax, NS 
Salary: $26.50 per hour 
Employment Term: Contract term July 2025 - March 31, 2026 (possible renewal), Full Time hours (35 per week) 
Reports To: Executive Director 
 
General Description: 
Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre is centrally located in the urban Indigenous community of Halifax and is looking for One (1) Active Living Community Coordinator.  This role is designed to work with the Urban Indigenous Community to encourage promote an active healthy lifestyle. Working through the lens of reducing barriers and promoting fairness, the Active Living Community Coordinator will work to create strategies, policies, programs and initiatives that focus on social inclusion and access while engaging the community to become more physically active. Must be willing to work weekends/ evenings.

Key Responsibilities: 
  • Create, coordinate, implement and periodically update our Active Living Strategy by ensuring that the strategy reflects community needs as well as follows the MNFC priorities. 
  • Focus on the urban Indigenous populations that are less active or sedentary (including the ageing population, adolescents, families and staff) 
  • Build partnerships and work collaboratively with other agencies, community organizations and all MNFC departments; to engage community and staff by finding ways to increase social inclusion through increased access to and participation in becoming more physically active through a cultural focused lens 
  • Develop and administer active living programs, special events and other initiatives designed to increase opportunities for community members to get physically active and promote a healthy lifestyle 
  • Deliver a group-based activities, offer advice and support on encouraging inactive community members as well as staff to participate in regular active living activity.  
  • To provide follow up one-to-one advice in person, over the telephone or by email to persons who attend activities (program) and deliver brief interventions and motivational interviewing to ensure you are able to support community members   
  • Monitor the increase in the number of inactive community members who are regularly participating in some form of healthy active living activity every day as a result of attending the programs.  
  • Organize, provide and promote activity sessions in planned outreach venues throughout MNFC.  
  • Refer to Elders, community members, where appropriate, to other clinics or professionals for healthy lifestyle services e.g. smoking cessation, health care, physiotherapy etc.  
  • Collect participant information, update and enter into the MNFC database system 
  • Actively promote and provide revision, accessibility issues and other initiatives around physical activity, play and play initiatives 
  • Undertake regular training to extend and update own knowledge of health and wellbeing issues.  
  • Prepare proposals to seek funding to run active healthy living programs and services 
  • Adhere to all the MNFC policies 

Qualifications:  
  • Degree in Recreation, Kinesiology, Health Education/ Promotion or a combination of education, training and experience that would demonstrate the capability to perform the duties of the position; 
  • Experience with developing community through strategic partnerships and engagement, designed for the Urban Indigenous Community; 
  • Experience in marketing and health promotion activities.  
  • Programs and special events organizing experience; 
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; 
  • Demonstrably high level of effective interpersonal skills; 
  • Understanding of the impact of the social determinants of health on active living participation for Indigenous People 
  • Must possess strong planning, organizational, evaluation and administrative skills and an ability to multi-task; 
  • Knowledge of Indigenous history, culture and traditions 
  • Proficient in use of IT including databases, Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.  
  • Must provide a Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Abuse Registrar upon hire 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.  Travel may be required
