Location: Halifax, NS
Salary: $58,000.00
Employment Term: May 2026 to March 31st, 2027 (possibility of renewal) Full time hours (35 hours/ week)
Reports To: Housing & Homelessness Program Coordinator
Position Summary
Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre is centrally located in the urban Indigenous community of Halifax and is looking for One (1) The Housing & Homelessness Program Coordinator.
This role is responsible for managing the intake process for Indigenous individuals and families seeking supportive housing services. This role serves as the first point of contact to accessing MNFC supportive housing opportunities, ensuring a welcoming, culturally safe, and trauma-informed experience while assessing client needs and connecting them to appropriate housing and support services. The Coordinator works collaboratively with community partners and internal teams to promote housing stability and holistic well-being.
Core Responsibilities
Client Intake & Assessment
- Conduct intake interviews using a culturally safe, trauma-informed, and strengths-based approach
- Assess housing needs, risks, and eligibility for in-house supportive housing programs
- Maintain accurate and confidential client records and documentation
- Prioritize applicants based on urgency, vulnerability, and program criteria
Cultural Safety & Relationship Building
- Create a respectful, welcoming environment grounded in Indigenous cultural values and practices
- Build trusting relationships with clients, recognizing the impacts of intergenerational trauma and systemic barriers
- Incorporate cultural knowledge, traditions, and community connections into intake processes where appropriate
Coordination & Referrals
- Connect clients to housing units, support services, and community resources (health, mental health, addictions, income support, etc.)
Program Administration
- Track vacancies and maintain waitlists for supportive housing programs
- Prepare reports, intake statistics, and program data as required
- Ensure compliance with organizational policies, privacy standards, and funding requirements
Community Engagement
- Participate in outreach activities to connect with urban Indigenous populations experiencing housing insecurity
- Attend case conferences, team meetings, and community networks
Communications
- Communicate all relevant information to the appropriate Coordinator. This may be important client information, anything a client has revealed that needs to be followed up, and any unforeseen problems or situations
Other Duties:
- Maintain a workplace environment and approach that meets the cultural and wholistic needs of Indigenous clients.
- Practice and maintain a positive role; lead by example with trauma-informed, non-judgemental support.
- Assist in deescalating situations by using conflict resolution skills
- Commit to the development of the MNFC and participate in internal committees, projects and activities.
- Attend and participate in professional development opportunities as required.
- Adhere to all policies governing the MNFC ergo the DBHC policies
- May preform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications and Experience Required for the Position:
- Diploma or degree in social work, human services, Indigenous studies or a related field (or equivalent lived/work experience)
- Knowledge of housing systems, homelessness and supportive housing models
- Experience working with Indigenous communities and comprehensive cultural knowledge considered an asset.
- Demonstrated skills in guiding individuals, and the utilization of new practices in working with clients based on models of practice and Indigenous culture.
- Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively as a part of an interprofessional team.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and show initiative.
- Demonstrated ability to represent and respect the interest of clients.
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint).
- Successful applicant will be required to provide a Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector Check), Reliable means of transportation (must own a working vehicle) Provide copy of valid class 5 driver’s license, recent abstract.
