Employment Opportunity: Cultural Mentor
Location: Halifax, NS
Salary Range: $24/hour
Employment Term: Full-time (35 hours/week) November 2024 to March 31st, 2025, with possibility of renewal up to 16 months total (covering employee leave)
Reports to: Early Years Navigator
General Description:
The Cultural Mentor will provide cultural support to rural and urban, Indigenous children and youth within the home environment and/or community. The mentor will work with different departments within the MNFC to create cultural experiences and provide support to children and youth attending pre-existing programming. This position requires a compassionate individual who enjoys interacting with children/ youth. The mentor will be responsible for creating programming for both individual and group settings. The Cultural Mentor must be warm and friendly, with a strong work ethic, a positive attitude and a passion for bringing people together and sharing culture. This job description will change as the workplace changes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work collaboratively with children and youth by providing support to access services
- Provide one-on-one as well as group support to indigenous youth
- Maintain a high level of confidentiality
- Ensure the program delivery is congruent with the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre’s mission, vision and philosophy
- Must demonstrate sensitivity, compassion, and a non-judgemental attitude, as well as initiative, self-direction and teamwork.
- Create cultural programming for children in youth for both individual and group settings
- Manage and maintain documentation related to a visit notes, budget and program spending
- Ensure community are informed and well connected to the many existing programs of the Friendship Centre and will work to identify existing resources outside of the Centre.
- Work in partnership with the Early Years Program, Parenting Journey, Youth Programming and Jordan’s Principle to ensure access and understanding of existing programming with in the Urban Indigenous Community.
- Must show an understanding of and appreciation for how the determinants of health impact families in the community and have knowledge in Indigenous ways of knowledge.
Qualifications & Experience;
Education in a related field an asset, but life experience will be considered
- Experience working with youth and families in both a group and individual setting
- Excellent communicator, both spoken and written
- Must access to a reliable vehicle, driver's license and proof of insurance
- Knowledge and experience of indigenous culture, traditions, and ways of life
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- Thrives working both independently and collaboratively
- Personal attributes: respectful, able to take direction
- Dependable and consistently works to uphold MNFC ethics and standards
