Indigenous Student Researcher

Employment Opportunity: Indigenous Student Researcher   
Location: Halifax, NS 
Salary Range: $23.00 per hour  
Employment Term: Contract term Hire Date - July 31, 2025 - Part-time (21 hrs per week) 
 
Description 
The Indigenous Student Researcher will perform Urban Indigenous community-based research involving the exploration of interest of local (Halifax area) Indigenous residents and artisans already working or involved in entrepreneurial ventures or interested in pursuing new opportunities in Indigenous Business and/or Arts and Crafts via a collaborative business model. This research will help to inform the planning and implementation of EOED’s first ever Indigenous Collaborative Business.  
 
Key Responsibilities  
 
  • Design a small-scale research framework based on research questions determined by EOED Directors.  
  • Connect with EOED team and local businesses and organizations.  
  • Facilitate community engagement sessions and activities  
  • Plan and perform interviews, surveys, sharing circles.  
  • Collect, record, analyze, and manage data.  
  • Interpret data analysis results and draw inferences and conclusions with Director of Strategy and the EOED team.  
  • Provide research results for draft reports.  
  • Present research results to EOED team members, residents, funders, and other contributors.  
  • Participate in on-going personal development and learning about the history and culture of First Nation, Inuit, and Metis people, and the historic and modern treaties we are in relationship with.  
 
Community Engagement  
  • Facilitate community engagement sessions and lead community discussions and sharing circles  
  • Collect, record, and manage data from community engagement sessions interviews, and surveys using OCAP ethics and Indigenous Evaluation Principles  
  • Communicate ongoing plans with EOED Directors and request support where needed.  
 
Research 
  • Develop a research framework that meets the needs of inquiry into the planning and implementation of EOED’s first Indigenous Collaborative Business Program 
  
Data Collection and Analysis  
  • Apply thematic analysis via Nvivo (qualitative analysis software) or manual entry  
  • Analyze the coded data and record preliminary themes in the relevant spread sheet  
  • Theme the data collected throughout each month and enter the themes into the relevant spreadsheet  
  • Enter the data collected and the analysis into a final report and send it to the Director of Strategy for review before sharing with the team.  
  • Co-lead a share back of results with community, the EOED team, and research participants.  
  
Learning and Professional Development  
  • Engaging in decolonized learning and practice  
  • Participate in learning around Indigenous evaluation and research practices  
  • Adhere to all Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre policies and practices; 
  • Other duties as required; 

Qualifications 
  • Must be an Indigenous student currently enrolled or returning to a post-secondary program within HRM with proof of community ties to a First Nation, Metis, or Inuit community (i.e. Indian status card, community member reference, etc.) 
  • Priority will be given to students enrolled in relevant programs such as, but not limited to, Business Administration, Planning, Commerce, etc. 
  • Excellent people person with the ability to work effectively with diverse groups and individuals to support inclusion  
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills;  
  • Experience using diverse social media channels to share information, build support and build momentum around ideas;  
  • Proficiency with software applications including Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and comfort using project/data management tools such as Monday, HubSpot, and/or others;  
  • Must provide a Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Abuse Registrar prior to hiring.
